Contact Baby Name Data

Use the form below to send the Baby Name Data Editorial Team a correction, a question about a figure, or a suggestion for an additional table. Corrections are especially welcome: please name the page and the figure you believe is wrong, and say what the SSA's published table shows instead, so the team can check the exact line of the source file before replying. Messages are answered in the order received, and a page that needs correcting is updated as soon as the check is complete, with its last-updated stamp refreshed.

Please do not send personal information beyond what your message needs, and note that the team can only discuss the statistics published here: it cannot provide records about any individual person, living or otherwise, because the public SSA file contains aggregate counts only and this site holds no other data about anyone.

What to include in a correction

A useful correction message names the page, quotes the figure exactly as it appears, and states the figure you believe the SSA's published table shows for the same year, sex, and name. That gives the team everything needed to check the exact line of the source file in one pass. If the site is wrong, the page is corrected and its last-updated stamp refreshed, and you receive a reply confirming the change. If the site agrees with the source file and the difference comes from a different table, a different year, or a spelling variant counted separately, the reply will explain which of those explains the gap, with the relevant figures, so the question is settled rather than merely answered.

Questions about the data

General questions about how a table was built are answered by pointing to the relevant method first: the methodology page for definitions, and the short guides for rank calculation, share of births, spelling variants, and the five-birth release rule. If your question goes beyond what those pages cover, send it here and the team will answer from the source file where the file permits an answer. Questions the file cannot answer, such as why individual families chose a name, cannot be answered from this site's source and will receive a short reply saying so, because inventing an answer would break the rule the whole site is built on.

Data requests and reuse

Readers who want the underlying data itself should download it from the Social Security Administration, linked in the source line at the foot of this page: the SSA files are the authoritative version, free, and more complete than any extract this site could supply. Individual figures from this site may be quoted with attribution as described in the terms of use. Requests to reuse whole tables or substantial parts of the site's text should be sent through this form with a description of the intended use, and are considered in the order received.

Finally, a note on what speeds a reply up. Messages that quote the exact page address and the exact figure in question are answered fastest, because the team can check the source line immediately. Messages that describe a figure from memory, or that compare this site's table with a differently built ranking from elsewhere, usually need an exchange to pin down which table, year, sex, and spelling is actually in dispute, and in most such cases the difference turns out to be the ranking basis rather than an error on either side: a combined-sexes list, a merged-spelling list, and this site's per-sex, literal-spelling tables will legitimately disagree about the same year, and the methodology page explains each of those choices in full.

Disclaimer: Baby Name Data publishes statistics drawn from U.S. Social Security Administration baby name records. Figures are counts of Social Security card applications by year of birth and are shown for general information only. Counts below five in any year, sex, or state are not released by the SSA and are not estimated here. Nothing on this page is advice about what to name a child.
