Baby Name Data
U.S. baby name statistics, 1880–2024 — counts, ranks and trends only

Disclaimer

Baby Name Data publishes statistics drawn from U.S. Social Security Administration baby name records for general information only. Figures are counts of Social Security card applications tabulated by year of birth, as released by the SSA in its national and state baby name files covering 1880 through 2024. Counts below five in any year, sex, or state are not released by the SSA and are not estimated, modelled, or reconstructed on this site, so totals describe recorded births at or above the release threshold, not every birth that occurred.

The records for the earliest years rest on card applications made later in life by people born in those years, and therefore form a large but partial record of nineteenth and early twentieth century births; relative measures such as rank and share are more reliable than absolute counts for comparisons involving those years. Nothing on this site is advice, professional or otherwise, about what to name a child or about any other decision, and no figure here should be relied on for legal, medical, financial, or official purposes. For official purposes, consult the Social Security Administration directly.

How figures are checked

Headline figures on this site, including the leading names and counts for the most recent year and for benchmark years, were cross-checked before publication against the Social Security Administration's own published top-name tables for the same years. The detailed method, including how ranks and shares are calculated and how decade and state figures are summed, is published in full on the methodology page, and the guides linked from it explain the source's release rules in plain language. If a reader finds a figure here that disagrees with the SSA's published table for the same name, year, and sex, the team asks to be told through the contact page, will check the source line directly, and will correct the page and refresh its last-updated stamp if the reader is right.

What this site is not

This site is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the Social Security Administration or any other government body, and its presentation of public data should not be taken as an official publication. It does not keep or provide records about individuals, cannot confirm whether any particular person bears a particular name, and does not offer naming advice, consultancy, or personalised recommendations of any kind. Its content is historical population statistics and explanations of how those statistics are compiled, and it should be read, quoted, and relied on only within those limits.

This disclaimer applies to every page of the site equally, including the tables reproduced in search results, shared links, and quoted extracts, and it should be read together with the methodology page, which sets out exactly how each figure is produced, and the terms of use, which govern reuse of the site's content. Where any short summary of this site's data appears anywhere that strips away the source line, the release-threshold note, or the coverage cautions stated here, that summary does not speak for this site, and the figures should be checked against the pages here or, better, against the Social Security Administration's own published tables before being relied on for any purpose.

Every effort is made to keep figures faithful to the source and to correct errors when they are found, but the site is provided without warranty, and if any figure here differs from the SSA's own published tables, the SSA's tables govern. External links are provided for reference, and their content is the responsibility of their own operators. Questions and corrections can be sent through the contact page.
